Past Impressions

Hailey Ciantar, Malta (Summer Camp 2021)Describing the Sustainable Cities Summer Camp as the best experience of my life so far is an understatement. Every day was a new adventure – from hiking in the black forest to spending the night in a hut with no showers to making pizza from scratch to biking around Freiburg to doing math calculations with Tobi to our very own talent show to swimming in the lake to hands-on farming and to visiting a local landfill. In these two weeks not only did I actively learn more than I imagined but I made life-long friendships and cannot wait for a reunion!”

Hristo Stoynov, Bulgaria (Summer Camp 2021): One thing I loved about SCSC was the project-based approach. I got hands-on experience on many Physics concepts, which I have studied prior at school. For example, sustainable energy is definitely a hot topic now, but I never got to learn how exactly it works before I attended the camp. From hiking to wind turbines to generating electricity with solar cells, the activities were perfectly chosen to present interestingly the basics of sustainable energy. My amazement when I first found out how photovoltaics work couldn’t have been better captured than in the photo.

Alessandra Avram, Italy (Summer Camp 2022): “I have no words other than saying: seize the opportunity! Here you can enjoy eating delicious environmentally friendly food while discussing issues that are tackling the contemporary world. I deeply felt the international atmosphere which made me feel a citizen of a world without borders. The working team created amazing activities where everyone could fit with their own interests and needs. It is the right place for everyone who is interested in having a positive impact and wants to get inspiration from their peers!”

Anna Machova, Czech Republic (Summer Camp 2022):One thing I loved about SCSC was the project-based approach. I got hands-on experience on many Physics concepts, which I have studied prior at school. Nana Hayrumyan, Armenia (Summer Camp 2022):I couldn´t be more thankful for the beautiful memories I cherish from SCSC´22 and a change in a whole attitude towards sustainable lifestyle. SCSC team is truly unique and supportive, enthusiastic in the emerging conversations- I wish I could go back to our late evening talks in the balcony on the topics of wind power plants, the future of solar panels, sustainable architecture, our own cities in future and so much more. The impact of SCSC stays with you forever, because the sessions and workshops enriched with real life experiences are so impressive and memorable in the absolutely beautiful and green city Freiburg! I especially loved the second week of our exploration, where we built mini urban space projects of sustainable cities, applying all we learnt with a creative touch in teams- isn´t that fascinating how you come together with students from all around the world and make plans, realistic models for sustainable future? I definitely recommend everyone to apply for SCSC´23, and trust me – you will spend two special weeks of summer in a warm and welcoming community of sustainability enthusiasts like you, and you will leave the camp inspired to be the change you want to see!
